5 New + Important Job Interview Questions To Ask During Your Job Search

After a turbulent and uncertain 2020, you may feel like you’re ready to make strides in your career by looking for a new job opportunity. As part of your preparation, one thing you need to put some extra thought into is knowing what important job interview questions you should be asking hiring managers. Since the professional landscape is continuously evolving, your expectations of employers may be changing as well. Whether you’re looking for more flexibility or an exceptional company culture, there might be new information you want to uncover during the hiring process. Here are five important job interview questions to ask:

What COVID-19 precautions is your office taking?

With COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out, there’s plenty of hope that life will resume some semblance of “normalcy” and we can eventually return to an office setting. If (or when) you are expected to go into the office for this new job, you’ll want to feel safe doing so.  During your job interview, be sure to ask the hiring manager what safety measures the company has taken during the pandemic. Have they adapted to remote work? If employees are expected to come in, what kind of social distancing and cleaning measures have been implemented? Depending on their answer, asking this question can help you determine if this is the right job opportunity for you.

What remote resources do you offer your staff?

The pandemic forced many professionals to work from home for the first time, and companies had to act quickly to ensure their employees could complete their work remotely. During your search, one of the most important job interview questions to ask is what remote resources the company offers their staff. Knowing what investments have been made in remote technology can give you a better idea of whether or not you’ll have the tools to seamlessly transition into a new role, especially in a virtual capacity.

What has your company done to feel connected during this time?

Many professionals have struggled to feel connected with their colleagues (and the overall company culture) over the course of the pandemic. Since a lack of communication and transparency can have serious consequences on employee morale and productivity, it’s important to know what a potential employer is doing to reinforce company culture virtually. This is especially critical if the company you’re interviewing with is adapting a formal remote work policy.

How has COVID-19 affected your business?

COVID-19 has affected companies across all industries, and it’s worth it to ask how a potential employer’s business has been impacted by the pandemic. This can be an uncomfortable question to ask, but it’s more important than ever to have a full picture of the company’s health and ability to adapt to change before you decide to take on a new role. Trying to get a better feel for the company’s financial health, their response to the pandemic, and their overall goals can help you figure out whether this is the right fit for you.

What lessons have you, as a manager, learned from the pandemic?

During the interview process, you’ll likely meet with or be interviewed by your potential manager. If you get to this point, you should ask what lessons this person has learned over the course of the pandemic. Some things you can consider asking are how their communication skills have changed with their team or whether or not they’ve stepped in to help their team be more productive in a new remote work environment. Remember, since you’ll be working with this person on a regular basis, it’s important to know how they’ve adjusted as a leader during this time!
