When Tessa was looking for her first position out of graduate school, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. At the suggestion of a family friend, she reached out to The Execu|Search Group for help with her search. Unexpectedly, her recruiter asked if she had ever considered working within recruiting. Although Tessa didn’t have any experience in the field, she decided to give it a shot and joined The Execu|Search Group as an Executive Recruiter. After two short weeks on the Office Support + Human Resources team, Tessa knew this was the right career path for her. Tessa has since been promoted to Senior Managing Director, and was happy to share her growth story: On why she joined The Execu|Search Group… Although I didn’t know much about the recruiting industry, I was sold on the opportunity during my interview with one of the partners. It seemed like a supportive and fun work environment, and a continuously challenging position. On what she loves about working here… There are a wide range of things I love about working at Execu|Search, but I really appreciate the supportive culture and opportunities for growth. When I first started, the bullpen was always so helpful—often giving me advice without solicitation. Everyone’s energy and enthusiasm for their work was also contagious. Throughout the years, my supervisor has always looked out for my best interests and given me the autonomy to develop my own approach. While I have been challenged personally, Execu|Search does not have a cut-throat environment. The lack of quotas allows us to focus on building quality relationships with our clients and candidates. On what she enjoys most about her job… I truly love managing my team and watching them succeed. A lot of people helped get me to where I am today, so I welcome all opportunities to mentor up and coming recruiters. On the recruiting side, I am never bored! There are always new challenges to overcome, so I am constantly on my toes. I also enjoy the relationship-driven nature of this business. Getting to know my clients on a more personal level and helping professionals find jobs that better fit their needs have been very rewarding aspects of my career. On what she thinks sets her apart from others in this field… I always follow a few personal rules: be responsive, be positive and friendly, and be honest. There are so many recruiters in this business who only get into it for the money, but to me, it should always be about the people. I truly believe that you must do right by people first; then the money will come. I have a strong sense of responsibility to my clients and candidates, which over the years, has enabled them to trust me with their hiring and career decisions. For example, I regularly advise my clients on their hiring needs because they trust my insight on the market. On the other hand, my candidates give me the freedom to make interview decisions on their behalf because they know I will not send them to an employer that isn’t a good fit for their personality or requirements.
