Having a LinkedIn profile is an essential part of your online presence, but an appropriate profile picture is also integral to the initial stages of the hiring process. According to Julie Mauer, an Account Manager within The Execu|Search Group’s Workforce Management Solutions division, a clean and professional profile picture counts for more than you might imagine. “Employers and recruiters will check your LinkedIn page before giving you a call, so make sure your profile picture accurately represents you in a professional light,” she says. “The employer will review your LinkedIn profile to envision who you are as a professional, and a great photo in addition to well-written headline, can make all the difference.” In fact, according to LinkedIn, you’re 14 times more likely to be viewed if you have a picture to accompany your profile. Therefore, when choosing a photo, make sure it: Is only of you (no children, animals, or friends); Is shot from the chest up—LinkedIn photos are small, so make sure that the people viewing your profile can clearly see your face; Has a clean, uncluttered background; Reflects who you are on a daily basis. A great picture is so important, that LinkedIn is traveling across the country to offer free head shots as well as profile advice to members in select locations.
